Facet-driven spine pain can feel subtle at first, but as stiffness and aching build over time, everyday movement like turning, standing upright, or bending backward can start to feel limited.
What Are Facet Joints?
Facet joints are paired joints located on the back portion of the spine. They connect one vertebra to the next and help guide controlled movement, especially twisting, bending, and extending. Because they are constantly involved in movement and stability, facet joints are vulnerable to:
- Increased load from disc degeneration or posture changes
- Degenerative wear and tear
- Arthritis-related inflammation
- Injury and mechanical strain
When facet joints become irritated, pain often develops gradually and can become persistent.
