Facet joint pain can build slowly, then suddenly start affecting everything from posture to sleep, especially when stiffness and aching make it harder to stand, twist, or move freely.
What Are Facet Joints?
Facet joints are paired joints located on the back of the spine. They connect each vertebra to the next and help control spinal movement, particularly bending, twisting, and leaning backward. Facet joints can become irritated due to:
- Degenerative wear and tear
- Arthritis-related inflammation
- Injury or repetitive mechanical strain
- Increased load from disc degeneration
- Postural changes and compensation patterns
When facet inflammation develops, pain often becomes more noticeable during movement and can gradually become chronic.
